In my small yard, hiding the compost pile isn’t easy. That’s why I said goodbye to a funky black plastic composter, in favor of a more aesthetic design. My new cedar composter from Steve’s Earth Engines is a year old, and has aged to a gentle patina that fits easily into my backyard garden landscape, tucked along the border.
Success in a kitchen garden includes investing in garden tools that work over the long haul. This double bin system makes it easy to turn; fill up one side, then fork over to the other to naturally aerate the pile and keep it cooking to keep the pile heated so the materials break down fast. The open sides allow air flow and I am diligent about adding layers of “brown” and “green”, similar to making lasagna. Compost happens, yet good compost is an art and a science. I’m convinced that the right bin in the right place can also make a difference.
