Taming the wild garden takes courage. But when the nasturtium vines take over the paths and sprawl along the steps, it is time to get to work. I rip out the old lettuce and plant new rows of meslcun and salad greens, yank weeds from in between the leeks, to reveal dry tops of shallots and red onions ready to harvest. The ferny foliage of the fennel which looked magnificent just a few weeks earlieris now bulbous and woody, and blocks the sunlight to the basil and artichokes. Don’t be afraid to haul out the old stuff, to welcome in vibrant new energy into your garden. Think ahead to the fall garden, and start sowing seeds for crops that will thrive on cooler weather ahead.
