Combining art with food is my idea of a good kitchen garden design. When planting your kitchen garden, think beyond the practical N-P-K requirements of healthy garden soil. Visualize color, and the excitement of planting with dabs of red radicchio, alongside ruffles of blue green kale. It’s is like eating the landscape.
Design your kitchen garden close to the house, with a bird’s eye view from above. Think Versailles, with the massive decorative beds and borders. Consider planting an ornamental massing of color, such as purple basil, lemon gem marigolds or even curly parsley which will provide a lush circle of green all summer, while creating a visual boundary.
