Full color photographs are designed to charm the gardener with images yet can be misleading. I take time to read the copy in search of helpful information such as tips for sowing seeds, days to maturity, descriptions of height, sun or part-shade requirements. The best seed catalogs advise on what soil conditions are best for each plant, and most importantly what does it taste like? After all I am growing a food garden.
When my seeds arrive, I group the packets into different piles according to when they can be planted. Since I store my seeds in an airtight container in a cool dry spot, many of my seed packets are several years old and the garden is usually filled with tried and true. This year, however, I’m ready to try something new. I’m studying the seed catalogs, comparing photos, copy and price before I place my order. It’s going to be a long wait before I start the seeds, and this time of year I welcome the color photos – even if it is only wishful thinking.
